As the New York Giants approach the May 1 deadline to decide on Deonte Banks’ $12.6 million fifth-year option, head coach John Harbaugh has delivered a candid assessment of the young cornerback’s struggles.
Harbaugh acknowledged that Banks has underperformed, admitting the player himself would agree. However, he remains optimistic that Banks can improve significantly moving forward.
Banks’ 2025 season was disappointing by most metrics. He finished with a low PFF defensive grade, ranked near the bottom among qualified cornerbacks, and failed to record an interception. Opposing quarterbacks consistently found success targeting him, contributing to a sharp decline in the Giants’ defensive efficiency when he was on the field.
With the Giants’ defense performing far worse statistically in his presence, the franchise now faces a tough call on whether to commit to him long term.
At the same time, the team’s decision to draft Colston Hood in the second round signals a push for competition within the secondary. Harbaugh praised Hood’s intensity and play style, suggesting he could elevate the entire unit and bring a more aggressive edge.
Harbaugh emphasized his vision for a dominant, high-energy defensive back room, making it clear that every player—including Banks—will need to step up.
With a key contract decision looming and new talent entering the mix, the Giants’ secondary is entering a defining phase ahead of the 2026 season.
