The fallout from Alex Cora’s sudden firing is already creating tension inside the Boston Red Sox clubhouse, and now Trevor Story finds himself at the center of it. Less than 24 hours after publicly reacting to Cora’s dismissal, Story was removed from Boston’s starting lineup, raising immediate questions about timing and tension within the organization.

The Red Sox stunned baseball by firing Cora along with five members of his coaching staff after a disappointing 10-17 start to the 2026 season. The move came despite Boston’s recent dominant 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles and left many players frustrated by both the decision and how it was handled.

Story did not hide his feelings. Speaking after the managerial shake-up, the veteran shortstop admitted the team’s direction felt uncertain and made it clear the decision had shaken the clubhouse. His comments reflected a wider frustration among players, many of whom reportedly felt blindsided by the front office’s actions.

Then came another surprise. On Sunday, Story was suddenly removed from the lineup for the game against the Orioles, with Andruw Monasterio stepping in at shortstop. Athlon Sports reported that the move came shortly after Story’s public comments, though it remains unclear whether it was directly connected to his remarks or simply based on performance.

Story’s struggles at the plate this season have certainly added pressure. Through the opening stretch, he has been one of Boston’s most criticized veterans, with inconsistency at the plate and questions around leadership surfacing as the team slipped to the bottom of the AL East. Earlier this month, even Cora had already moved him down in the batting order in an attempt to help him reset.

Now, with Cora gone and interim manager Chad Tracy stepping in, the Red Sox are trying to sell what chief baseball officer Craig Breslow called a “fresh start.” But inside the clubhouse, the mood appears far more complicated.

For Trevor Story, the lineup change may be about baseball, or it may symbolize something bigger. Either way, it highlights the uncertainty surrounding a Red Sox team already in crisis. With the season slipping early and tensions rising, Boston’s biggest challenge may no longer be on the field, but inside its own clubhouse.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
